Polling for Municipal elections peaceful

Kolkata, May 27 (UNI) Polling for the elections in five municipal corporations- Panskura in Midnapur, Coopers Camp in Nadia, Nalhati in Birbhum, Durgapur and Dhupguri ended peacefully today.

IG (Law&Order) Raj Kanojia said the election was peaceful and incident free except a few EVM snags in a number of booths.

''There were no reports of clashes or any other incidents as security measures had been beefed up,'' he said.

''Police patrolling was high under the supervision of the DIG,'' he added.

Apart from municipal polls, election was also held in a few panchayat, panchayat samiti and Jilla-parishads.

Around 93 per cent polling was reported in the 12 wards of Coopers Camp, Nadia, where 11,668 people exercised their franchise.

Nadia SP H K Kusumkumar said a minor incident occurred in a booth in Nadia where two supporters of CPI(M) and Congress were detained by the police. The incident occurred following a squabble between the Congress and the CPI(M) workers.

The election to 33 jilla-parishad and panchayat seats also ended peacefully with 60 and 67 per cent polling respectively.

Election for Durgapur Municipal Board ended peacefully with 80 per cent polling, said District Magistrate Manish Jain. Polling was held in 43 wards in Durgapur.

In Nalhati Municipal Board, Birbhum, around 75 per cent polling was reported in 16 wards.

In Dhupguri Municipal Corporation election, around 85 per cent votes were polled.
