Srinagar, May 27 (UNI) Troops foiled yet another infiltration bid by militants from across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir when they killed two intruders in Kupwara district today.

Elsewhere in the state, one person was killed while security forces averted a major tragedy when they detected and defused a powerful improvised Explosive Device (IED), and also apprehended Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants, an official spokesman said.

Defence spokesman Lt Col A K Mathur said alert troops noticed suspicious movement near Ustad Post along the LoC in Keran sector of Kupwara district at 0230 hrs early this morning.

When challenged, a big group of intruders opened fire on the troops. The fire was effectively retaliated, he added.

In the ensuing gun-battle, Col Mathur said two infiltrators were gunned down.

However, he said the other militants of the group escaped back to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) under the cover of darkness.

This was one of the many such ''failed'' attempts by the militants in the recent past to cross over to the Indian side from PoK, the spokesman said.

Also during the past few months, several militants have surrendered before the authorities soon after crossing over to India from PoK where they received arms training.

The official spokesman said suspected militants shot at and wounded 32-year-old Ali Mohammad Khan at Hardoo-Hangel in Yaripora area of Kulgam district in south Kashmir.

Khan was rushed to the SMHS hospital here where he succumbed to injuries. Police have registered a case in this regard and taken up investigations.

Security forces averted a major tragedy today when they detected and defused the IED at Drugmullah in frontier Kupwara district.

Police said troops during a search operation detected the IED, weighing about three kg, at Watakhani in Drugmullah area.

The area was immediately cordoned off and all the residents evacuated to avoid any loss of life, police said, adding a bomb disposal squad was later summoned to defuse the IED.

Police said a huge loss of life and property could have occurred if the IED was not detected and defused on time.

Police apprehended Ghulam Qadir Mir, a resident of Waddar Bala, from Handwara area in Kupwara district of north Kashmir when he was dispatching a consignment to Lashkar militants. Four UBGL grenades were also seized from his possession.

Police said Mir was a close associate of several Lashkar militants operating in Rajwar area of the district.

Security forces also apprehended a Hizb militant at Chatroo area of Kishtwar district of Jammu region last evening.

The spokesman said the Jammu and Kashmir Police seized four hand grenades, 22 detonators, one battery (12 volt), two plates of solar lights and 20 ft cordex from a militant hideout in Trimbal Ghat area of Udhampur district in Jammu region.
