Harmonious relation between Legislature, Judiciary needed

Thiruvananthapuram, May 27 (UNI) The 72nd conference of Presiding Officers of legislative bodies in India today called upon the legislature and judiciary to ensure harmonious working of the democratic system in the country.

Briefing newspersons here, Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker Sardar Charnjit Singh Atwal said the delegates had expressed concern over several instances when the judiciary had interfered in the domain of the legislatures.

The conference adopted a resolution, calling upon all organs of state to strictly adhere to the functions and jurisdictions assigned to them by the Constitution to ensure harmonious working of the democratic system in the country.

It also adopted a resolution expressing deep anguish and grave concern over the disturbing trend of disorderly conduct of the legislators, which was systematically undermining the credibility of the legislative bodies.

He said the delegates stressed that orderly and dignified conduct of the legislators, both inside and outside the House, was a pre-requisite for the smooth and effective functioning of the parliamentary system.

Mr Atwal said several participants also called for electoral reforms in order to curb the influence of money and muscle power in the electoral process.
