Commissioner seeks conclusive definition of encounter

Pune, May 27 (UNI) Calling for a proper definition of an encounter, City Police Commissioner Jayant Umraniker today informed that a clarification has been sought from government in this regard.

In an interactive session with members of 'Pune Shramik Patrakar Sangh' on ''Vision Pune', the Commissioner, who also holds additional charge of the State CID, said although the State Government has issued a notification recently which stated that all encounter cases will be investigated by the State CID, yet it remains to be defined conclusively.

''Whether a criminal or a suspect killed in a clash, is an encounter or whether a criminal or a suspect killed in an act of self-defence by the police or for protection of public property is an encounter. These are some of the issues on which clarifications have been sought,'' Mr Umranikar said.

The Police Commissioner said law gives only the Police, the legal right to resort to violence to curb violence and that it is difficult to differentiate whether the Police committed a certain act in self defence or for protection of public property.
