Centre earmarks Rs 18 cr for river Jhelum in Kashmir

Srinagar, May 27: The Centre has earmarked Rs 18 crore for the conservation and beautification of river Jhelum in Kashmir.

Union Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz said a detailed project report on river Jhelum would be analysed by the central and state governments within next ten days.

Prof Soz said his Ministry would provide additional funds for conservation and protection of the river, which he described as heritage and symbol of culture and civilisation of Kashmir.

The Centre would release more funds, if required, for construction of embankments, development of parks, illumination, beautification and reconstruction of Chattabal Weir along the river, he added.

The Union Minister said river Jhelum demands focused attention for its conservation and protection.

Prof Soz said his Ministry would give a concrete proposal for restoration, revival and conservation of all the water bodies in Jammu and Kashmir, including river Jhelum and its tributaries.

For the purpose, he said appropriate funds would be allocated in the eleventh plan.

''We have a 5000-year-old recorded history in which the great river has been referred to as Wyeth. Being a symbol of our great civilisation and cultural identity, it is our duty to restore the past glory of the river,'' Prof Soz added.

He sought cooperation from the public and the media in spreading awareness about the conservation and protection of river Jhelum.
