Zimbabwe police arrest 200 opposition activists
HARARE, May 26 (Reuters) Zimbabwe police arrested more than 200 opposition activists and officials today during a meeting the party was holding at its headquarters, an opposition spokesman said.
''They raided the offices at Harvest House. They had no search warrant. They gave no reasons but they have taken in our members who were holding meetings there,'' Nelson Chamisa of the Movement for Democratic Change told Reuters.
''We believe this is part of the harassment that we are being subjected to.'' The meeting did not appear to include top opposition figures.
Opposition groups have accused President Robert Mugabe of widespread human rights abuses in a crackdown on dissent.
He accuses opposition figures and Western countries of trying to remove him from power in Zimbabwe, which is suffering from an economic meltdown.
