DMK names Kanimozhi, Siva as RS candidates

Chennai, May 26 (UNI) The ruling DMK today announced former MP 'Trichy' N Siva and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's Poet-daughter Kanimozhi as the party candidates for the ensuing biennial polls to the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu.

A party high-level meeting, chaired by Mr Karunanidhi at the DMK headquarters 'Anna Arivalayam', unanimously elected Mr Siva and Ms Kanimozhi as candidates for the polls to be held on June 15.

To a question, Mr Karunanidhi ruled out chances of his daughter being given a Cabient berth after her election to the Upper House of Parliament.

Of the six seats that would fall vacant, the DMK had decided to contest two seats, while allotting one each to the Congress and the CPI. The main Opposition AIADMK would contest the remaining two seats.

A keen contest had earlier seemed likely for the sixth seat as none of the parties had the required numbers. However, a fough competition was averted as Mr Karunanidhi chose not to contest the seat and left it to the AIADMK.
