UN rights envoy condemns Suu Kyi detention decision

GENEVA, May 25 (Reuters) The U N special rapporteur for human rights in Myanmar, Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, today condemned the one-year extension of Aung San Suu Kyi's house arrest, describing her confinement as cruel and unacceptable.

Pinheiro called on the junta to reconsider its decision, announced by a government source in the capital Yangon, saying it went against its plans to transition to democracy.

''This is a most regrettable decision by the Myanmar authorities,'' Pinheiro told Reuters by telephone. ''She is in solitary confinement and practically incommunicado ... The conditions of this house arrest are cruel and unacceptable.'' REUTERS RN KP2030
