Stone-throwing groups clash

Vadodara, May 25 (UNI) A mob resorted to stone-throwing in the sensitive Champaner Darwaza area in the city after the Friday prayers at the Limbuvadi masjid today, police said.

The people, who came out of the masjid after prayers, started pelting stones at pedestrians.

Later, the trouble spread to the Machipeth area, where two groups indulged in stone-pelting. The members of the minority community tried to burn the effigy of the M S University Senate member Deepak Shah. The police intervened and took the effigy away.

Police reinforcements were rushed to the area as the other group retaliated and started to protest the action of the Muslims by indulging in heavy stone-throwing.

The situation was brought under control by police. Meanwhile, all Muslim-dominated market areas observed a bandh from this morning.

Areas like Yakutpura, Fatehpura, Panigate and Madar market were closed. Local Muslim leaders went around the areas and forced the shopkeepers to down shut their shops.
