Campaigning for by-poll gains momentum in Manipur
Imphal, May 25: Campaigning for the June 2 by-elections to Khangabok and Khundrakpam Assembly constituencies peaked with Chief Minister O Ibobi and other Congress leaders wooing voters.
The by-election assumed significance as the Congress is one short of gaining absolute majority in the 60-member House. The CPI with four MLAs and RJD with three are supporting the Congress led Secular Progressive Front government in Manipur.
Chief minister's wife O. Landhoni(Congress) will contest at Khangabok in Thoubal district. Apart from her Md Qutub Ali(NCP) and Kh Angou(Samajwadi Party) are in the fray. Mr O Ibobi vacated the seat as he won in two constituencies in the February elections.
Six candidates will fight for the Khundrakpam seat. They are L Lala (BJP), H Bimola (Samata Party), N Singhajit (MPP), L Premchand (CPI), Th Lokeshore (INC) and K Tomba (NCP).
Meanwhile, Chief Electoral Officer R R Rashmi said only central forces will be engaged for election duty.
