Change policies to retain people's support: Karat to UPA

Coimbatore, May 24: CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat cautioned the UPA government and the Congress leaders that they would lose the support of the people if they did not change their policies.

Launching the Coimbatore edition of his party organ ''Theekathir'' here last night, he called on the democratic and secular parties to join hands to put an alternative set of policies in place. He said the government and the Congress should learn lessons from the election results in Punjab, Uttarkhand and Uttar Pradesh.

Refuting the explanation given by Finance Minister P Chidambaram that the price of commodities had increased because the UPA was spending huge funds for welfare schemes, Mr Karat said the government had also failed to check the rising prices of petrol.
