Two engineers held for causing worker's death

Nagpur, May 24 (UNI) Police have arrested two junior engineers (JE's) of Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited (Mahagenco) on charges of causing death of a contract labourer in the public sector utility's Koradi Thermal Power Station (KTPS) near here.

According to the police, the JEs, identified as Shirish Vishwanath Ghate (46) and Avinash Uttamrao Patil (44), were arrested yesterday for causing death of a contract labourer Vijay Devgirikar (42) in the KTPS premises.

Devgirikar, who was pulled into the chute overhead when the "conveyor belt" started moving, sustained serious injuries on his waist, neck and chest, and succumbed while undergoing treatment at a hospital here, a police press release said here.

Ghate got Devgirikar to work on the "conveyor belt" without obtaining permission from the control room, while Patil did not sound the warning siren from the control room before starting the conveyor belt. He did not verify over walkie-talkie if any work was going on over the system, it also said.

Ghate and Patil were arrested under sections 304 (A), 338 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and section 92 of the Factories Act, the press release added.
