Trees cannot be cut without due permission
Mumbai, May 24 (UNI) The garden department of BMC today announced that no tree will be cut without the approval of the tree authority, the apex body within BMC that looks after the environmental aspects and green cover in the city.
Garden superintendent P A Naringrekar today in a press release said that as far the beautification of Gateway of India(GoI) is concerned, the permission to cut the trees is still mid-way and will complete after a visit by tree authority members and a resolution by the tree authority granting the permission to cut the trees.
The beautification of GoI is being undertaken by the BMC in association with INTACH, a NGO.
The GoI beautification plan is being obstructed by the presence of 144 trees in and around the area according to the tree authority's recent site visit report. The MCGM intends to maintain and increase the number of trees and the green cover by planting trees of similar profile to ensure that the green cover in the area is not disturbed.
As per the plan, 119 trees have been identified to be obstructing the plan out of which 99 will be transplanted and 20 trees which cannot be transplanted will be cut if required and the remaining 25 will not be touched.
