Railways' freight revenue up 8.78 per cent
New Delhi, May 24 (UNI) The Railways generated Rs 3619.92 crore of revenue earnings from freight traffic during April this year as compared to Rs 3327.77 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 8.78 per cent.
It carried 60.68 million tonnes of freight traffic during April as compared to 58.09 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, an increase of 4.46 per cent.
The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 39,420 million during the month of April 2006 to 39,552 million during April 2007, an increase of 0.33 per cent.
Of the total earnings during April this year, Rs 1376.95 crore came from transportation of 26.45 million tonnes of coal, followed by Rs 298.55 crore from 3.08 million tonnes of foodgrains, Rs 327.84 crore from 6.29 million tonnes of cement, Rs. 240.56 crore from 2.84 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs 257.07 crore from 3.62 million tonnes iron ore for exports.
In addition, the Railways earned Rs. 156.33 crore from transportation of 2.14 million tonnes of fertilizers, Rs. 170.11 crore from 1.55 million tonnes of iron and steel for steel plants, Rs 169.76 crore from 4.49 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants and Rs 622.75 crore from 10.22 million tonnes of other goods.
