Omar describes unemployment problem 'alarming'

Jammu, May 24 (UNI) National Conference (NC) President Omar Abdullah today said the unemployment problem is assuming alarming dimensions and the casual approach of coalition government towards the issue has added to the woes of educated youth of the state.

Addressing a series of public gatherings in the border district of Rajouri, he said the large number of youths were coming out every year with degrees but government has failed to frame a comprehensive policy to secure their future by creating adequate employment avenues.

Describing the unemployment problem as alarming, Mr. Abdullah said the last four years had witnessed all the promises of providing employment to one member of each family falling flat.

''Instead of absorbing people in government offices, they are showing door to even those who are working in various departments for last several years,'' he said.

Opening of separate directorates would not solve the purpose unless it was backed by a working policy. Such a move was adding more evil to the already corrupt system, Omar said.

Referring to the huge burden put on the common man by increasing the power tariff, Omar said during NC regime, people were charged Rs. 50 to 100 while this had been increased to Rs 200 to 300 today.
