Official embarks on green mission

Aizawl, May 24 (UNI) A block development officer of Chawngte in southern Mizoram has initiated a novel programme of afforestation under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme(NREGS).

Going off-track from the trodden path, BDO Vanlalthlana said the idea of planting trees occurred to him when he saw the little forest covered area within his jurisdiction.

''I never realised that the southern parts of Mizoram would be devoid of trees and bamboo. Since, we were lucky to be covered under the NREGS, I thought it would be a good idea to plant more trees and bamboo under the scheme,'' he said yesterday.

Normally, the NREGS, where a villager can earn Rs 91 per day for 100 days a year, is used for village road constructions.

Under the BDO's green mission, people were asked to collect bamboo seeds, which will then be distributed among the people working under the scheme as daily labourers, while tree saplings will be provided by Lunglei Forest divisional office.

However, the total forest-covered areas in Mizoram is still largely compared to other states. According to forest census, the forest-covered areas in Mizoram is 86.96 per cent, Forest minister Dr R Lalthangliana said at the International Bio-Diversity Day observation here on Tuesday.
