Shillong, May 24: Meghalaya Governor B L Joshi today expressed concern over the deficient regional economic growth and human development in the north eastern states.

Inaugurating a two-day national seminar on 'growth and human development in north east India' at the North Eastern Hills University, Mr Joshi said studies showed that in the nineties and early twenties, the north eastern region had not experienced sufficient growth.

He said the region had all along been facing various challenges, cutting across the spheres of economy, society and polity towards its all round development.

The region requires a holistic and comprehensive approach that can unify the interest of various ethnic groups and synergise the strengths that are inherent in the society, polity and economy.

Stating that the region has made considerable progress in the field of education, the governor said this was mostly possible because of interventions and initiatives at all levels.

The two-day seminar was organised by the Economics Department of NEHU and attended by senior economists from several universities of the country.
