Dehradun bandh by Sikh federation evokes partial response

Dehradun, May 24 (UNI) The day-long bandh, called by the Uttarakhand Sikh Federation (USF) against the Dera Sacha Sauda issue, evoked partial response in this district of Uttarakhand today.

Government institutions and banks remained opened while shops in the main bazar remained closed.

Earlier, the Federation had also announced a 'chakka jam' but later on the demand by the public and several supporting organisation's, it was called off.

Vehicles, both public and private, plied as usual and petrol pumps remained open. The bandh was supported by Student Unions and social organisations. Political parties and Uttarakhand Akali Dal had, however, refrained from supporting the bandh.

The protesters, under the leadership of USF president Gurdeep Singh Tony, gathered at the Clock Tower, the heart of the City, and burnt the effigy of Dera Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim amidst sloganeering and flag marches throughout the city.

However, the outskirts of the city area remained unaffected by the bandh. No untoward incident was reported from any part of the district.

Mr Tony said the Dera chief's action has hurt the sentiments of Sikhs, and demanded an apology from him.
