Guwahati, May 24 (UNI) AGP MP Sarbananda Sonowal today alleged that the state Congress government was ''manipulating'' CBI to implicate him in a 20-year-old murder case.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr Sonowal said he received a court summons with regard to the murder of Saurav Bora, a naxal activist in 1986, and there were ''indications'' that a closed case was re-opened to target him politically by the Congress.

''I was a student leader at that time and along with me a number of student leaders from Dibrugarh district were interrogated initially by the CID and then CBI,'' he said, adding ''We had undergone a lie detector test and in 1995, the CBI submitted its final report exonerating me of any involvement in the case.'' ''But 12 years after that final report and after contesting and winning three general elections, I was astonished to get a summons in the same case. Initially, I tried to ignore that but when I realised that there was now a case against me for ignoring the summons, I today through my lawyers sought details of the case,'' he said.

''This only conforms that CBI was manipulated by the Congress party to finish me off politically,'' he said alleging that some of the ministers of the state government had been ''working hard'' to eliminate him politically.

Mr Sonowal is an MP from Dibrugarh. He defeated Mr Paban Singh Ghatowar of the Congress in the last Lok Sabha elections.
