BJP seeks Governor's help to solve sugarcane growers problems

Mumbai, May 24 (UNI) A BJP delegation, led by general secretary Gopinath Munde and party state chief Nitin Gadkari, today met Governor S M Krishna and urged him to prevail upon the State Government to compensate sugarcane growers at Rs 40,000 per hectare as their crop is likely to remain uncrushed this season.

The delegation also included Leader of the Opposition Pandurang Phundkar, BJP leader in assembly Eknath Khadse and 22 party legislators.

The delegation apprised the Governor of the ''burn sugarcane'' agitation spearheaded by the party and about the police lathicharge on agitators in which Mr Munde was also hurt.

The delegation further demanded that interest on loans taken by sugarcane growers should be waived for a year and their power bill too should be waived.

The delegation also demanded that 10 per cent blending of ethanol with petrol should be allowed as such a move will provide financial stability to the sugarcane growers. Further, the delegation demanded a Rs 2000 per tonne grant for sugar exports.

The Governor acknowledged that the issue of sugarcane growers was an important one and he would look into it.
