55 per cent polling in Khaga assembly seat

Fatehpur, May 24 (UNI) Under unprecedented security cover, 55 per cent polling was reported at Khaga assembly seat of the district, where polling was cancelled after death of Congress candidate Munna Lal Maurya.

The Khaga seat was to go to the polls in the fifth phase of polling to the 15th Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha on April 28.

The polling was peaceful, except minor complaints with regards to names in the voter list, District Election Officer/District Magistrate Mohd Mustafa said.

The assembly segment has a total of 2,78,539 electorate, who have sealed the fate of 13 candidates at 193 polling centres. The polling which was started at 700hrs continued till 1700 hrs.

Voting was affected for 45 minutes at Chandrapur polling booth, following a problem in the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM).

Those in the fray include Anand Lodhi (BSP), Anil Maurya (Congress), Dhunni Singh (BJP), Mohd Shafir (SP) and nine Independents. Last time, BSP had won from this seat.

For conducting free and fair polling, 13 companies of central forces and PACs were stationed in the area.
