Seven killed in multiple collision in TN

Kancheepuram, May 23 (UNI) Seven people were killed when a State Express Transport Corproation bus, a car and a lorry collided and caught fire on the narrow Palar bridge at Mamandur in Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu late last night.

Police sources said the impact of the collision was such that all the three vehicles were completely gutted in the fire.

The driver of the Sivakasi-bound bus from Chennai rammed into a tanker lorry whose driver suddenly applied brakes. A car, which was coming from behind with a complement of tourists from Sunguvarchathiram to Courtallam, rammed into the bus and a lorry which was tailing the car dashed into the vehicle.

In the impact, the bus, car and lorry caught fire killing seven people on the spot. The majority of victims were travelling in the car.

The deceased were identified as bus driver Anbarasan (43), Madhavan (35), Nirmalraj (30), Lawrence (36), Paulraj, car driver Siva and Arunachalam.

The charred bodies were removed to the Chengalpattu government hospital for post-mortem where heart-rending scenes were witnessed as the relatives of the deceased wept unconsolably.

Traffic on the busy Chennai-Trichy National Highway was affected for more than three hours following the mishap.
