Over 6O per cent polling in SMC elections

Shimla, May 23 (UNI) The elections to the Shimla Municipal Corporations (SMC) concluded peaceful here today with no incident of violence being reported from anywhere in the town with over 60 per cent of the people exercising its right to franchise.

''According to the information available with us, 60.59 per cent polling has been reported in elections,'' a senior government official, requesting anonymity told UNI here.

He said a ward in Bharari (ward no one) recorded the highest votes at 83.28 per cent, while a polling booth in Malyana (ward no 20) recorded the lowest votes at 36.03 per cent.

Overall, Kaithu (ward no three) polled a minimum of 56 per cent votes, while Boileuganj (ward no seven) recorded a maximum of 72.12 per cent votes, he said.

He said, in all, 66,221 people, including 38,091 males and 28,130 females, cast their votes in the local elections, which are being keenly watched with the state assembly elections just eight months away.

Bharari ward (ward no one) recorded 66.68 per cent polling, 60 per cent in Ruldu Bhatta (ward no two), 56 in Kaithu (ward no three), 58 in Annadale (ward no four), 65 in Summerhill (ward no five) and (Totu ward no six), 66.80 per cent in Tutikandi (ward no eight) and 67 per cent in Nabha (ward no nine) and 66.68 per cent in Fagli (ward no 10).

He Krishna Nagar (ward no 11) reported 61 per cent polling, Ram Bazar (ward no 12) 58.73 per cent polling, Lower Bazar (ward no 13) 57 per cent, Jakhu (ward no 14) 60.38 per cent, Benmore (ward no 15) 57, Engine Ghar (ward no 16) 62, Sanjuali (ward no 17) 54.45, Dhalli (ward no 18) 59.70, Chamyana (ward no 19) 58.88 and Malyana (ward no 20) 52.21 per cent.

Kasumpati (ward no 21) 62.49, Chotta Shimla (ward no 22), 51.72, Patiyog (ward no 23) 56.46, Khalini (ward no 24) 64.54 and Kanlog (ward no 25) 62.27 per cent, he said.
