Chennai, May 23: Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy has said the government would fill 65,000 engineering seats under its quota in various government and self-financing colleges in the state through a single window admission system.

Talking to newspersons here yesterday, he said the counselling to fill up these seats would be held from July nine to August 15.

As of now, counselling would be held in the city. If necessary, the government would consider holding counselling in other centres like Madurai, Tiruchirapalli and Coimbatore, he added.

As the previous experience of holding counselling in different centres was found to be time consuming, the government had decided to hold counselling in one centre in Chennai this year.

To enable students coming from other parts of the state to take part in the counselling, the government would give 50 per cent concession in bus fare for the students and their parents, he said.

Mr Ponmudy said that only after completion of the counselling process to fill up the seats under government quota, the self-financing colleges would be allowed to fill up the management quota, also through single window system.

He said counselling for the medical courses would be held from July two to eight.

So far, 87,200 applications had been sold for professional courses in the state, he said.

He said for architecture courses, the question of conducting aptitude tests would be decided after the Supreme Court gave its order in the case.

He said 2,062 teachers would be recruited through the teachers' recruitment board.
