DDA clears projects for Yamuna river front

New Delhi, May 23 (UNI) The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has plans to develop a number of projects relating to landscaping and development of the Yamuna River Front.

These would include setting up of a biodiversity park, development of water bodies - greens, construction of houses at Rohini, Narela and development of Convenient Shopping Centre, and upgradation of parks.

Clearance for these projects was given by a Screening Committee that met yesterday, a DDA statement said today.

Under the Landscape development plan of Yamuna River Front 'Pushta' Phase - II, alternative approach through the network of motorable road, major pathways, kuchcha narrow lanes and riverside walkways will be developed so that all the areas are conveniently approachable by cars during rains and floods.

While in the flood safe zone, interpretation centre, aquarium, amphitheatre, food court and play grounds will be provided, flood-prone areas will have camping sites, interactive orchard, theme garden, roadside urban greening, food courts, play area and picnic spots.

For drain management, it has been proposed to create an STP to tap the open drain running alongside Shanti Van and the treated water so obtained will be utilised for horticulture and other aesthetic purposes.

For Yamuna Biodiversity Park Phase-II the conceptual development plan for 300 acres of floodplains located close to river front was okayed.

Under the proposal, development of wetlands, grasslands, forest communities, biodiversity village, corridor vegetation, game, fishing, nature trails and peripheral plantations along with civic facilities was proposed which has been approved by the Screening Committee.

The biodiversity park in Yamuna which will have the biologically richest wetlands with luxuriant aquatic flora and fauna, will serve as paradise for resident and migratory birds.

The grassland communities will support herbivores and grassland birds. The ecosystems of phase - II will render additional ecological services such as trapping sediment, purification of water and scavenging pollutants etc.

A convenient shopping center will be set up in Sector 11, Rohini and local shopping center at Karkardooma Institutional Area which will provide facilities like shops, offices, departmental stores and other informal sector.

A multipurpose community hall and a budget hotel will come up by amalgamating plots at community center, Preet Vihar has also been approved.

A number of proposals for development of water bodies at various places like at Vishnu Garden, Dwarka and Mohamadpur etc. were also approved which will improve the ground water situation in localised areas.

The projects to construct multi-storeyed two bed-room housing at Sector A-9, Narela and EWS housing at Sector 34 Rohini were also approved.

A proposal relating to upgradation of District Park at Sirifort to improve ambiance and to provide additional facilities for the benefit of morning walkers was also approved.

The upgradation includes provision of parking area near entrance from Marshall Titoo Marg and Panchsheel Marg, including Kuchcha pathways, water bodies in low lying area with shelter, multi-purpose playfield and shelter facilities along side fitness trail.
