1993 blasts: 5 gets RI for landing of ammunition

Mumbai, May 23: Five persons, including four convicted landing agents and a public servant, were today sentenced to rigorous imprisonment (RI) between 6 and 14 years by a designated Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (prevention) Act (TADA) court here for their involvement in the landing of arms and ammunition, including RDX, before the 1993 serial bomb blasts.

TADA Judge P D Kode found landing agents Uttam Poddar, Abdul Aziz Gharadkar, Mohammad Kasam Lajpuria, Sajjad Alam and Tulsiram Surve, a public servant, guilty of the crime and awarded the sentence.

The court also slapped a fine ranging from Rs 50,000 to 1 lakh.

All the five were earlier convicted by the TADA court for actively participating in the landing of smuggled arms and ammunitions, which were used for serial blasts. The arms were smuggled into the country by the prime who is absconding accused Tiger Memon and Mohammad Dossa.
