UPA government failed to boost agriculture sector: Mishra

Patna, May 22 (UNI) Former Bihar Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra today charged the UPA government at the Centre with failing to tone up the country's agriculture sector during its three-year-long regime.

In a statement here, Dr Mishra, also the National president of JD(U)Kisan Sabha, said the UPA government had equally failed to implement the recommendations of the National Kisan Commission, constituted to suggest ways for revamping the country's 'sagging agriculture sector'.

'' Considerable time has lapsed since the submission of the report of the Commission, but no concrete step has so far been taken to implement it'' Dr Mishra alleged.

Expressing concern at the gradual dip in public investment in agriculture, Dr Mishra said steps should be taken to reverse the trend.

'' The Centre should also make all out efforts to achieve the desired 4.2 per cent growth in agriculture during the current(11th) plan period,'' he said and hoped that this would help generate employment opportunities for many un-skilled labourers besides giving impetus to the overall GDP growth.
