Salem gets 7-day police custody in extortion case

New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) Underworld don Abu Salem was today remanded in seven-day custody of the Delhi Police (Special Cell), for his alleged involvement in an extortion case.

Salem was brought here from Mumbai by train yesterday, after a production warrant was issued against him for allegedly threatening an East of Kailash businessman, demanding money.

He was produced in the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Seema Maini, who handed down the order.

The judge also laid down that the don's medical examination should be carried out daily and allowed him to meet his counsel on May 24 and 26.

The gangster had allegedly demanded Rs one crore from Rajat Nagrath, owner of Allied Communications in East of Kailash in 2002.

The police had asked for his custody to compare Salem's voice samples with the recorded threat calls allegedly made by him to Nagrath.

Salem is lodged in the the Arthur Road jail in Mumbai, after he was extradited from Portugal in 2005. He is one of the key accused in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case.
