JMM demands fresh census for Jharkhand

Dumka, May 22 (UNI) Jharkhand Mukti Morcha vice-president Hemlal Murmu has urged the Centre not to implement the recommendations of delimitation commission and conduct a fresh census in the state.

Talking to newspersons here Mr Murmu said a letter in this regard had also been sent to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President A P J Abdul Kalam.

According to recommendations of the commision the Assembly seats in the Santhal Pargana area would reduce to 16 from 18.

Demanding a fresh consensus for the state, Mr Murmu said Centre should cancel the 2001 census and conduct a fresh one for the benefit of the tribals.

The JMM leader also said reduction of reserved seats belonging to ST would adversely effect their representation in the Assembly.

The party has also called for a meeting on May 25 to discuss the issue, he added.
