Wage Boards for journalists, non-journalists

New Delhi, May 21: The Government today constituted Wage Boards for journalists and non-journalists with Dr Justice K Narayana Kurup as chairman.

The Boards will start functioning with immediate effect for submission of Reports within the stipulated period of three years, a Labour Ministry announcement said.

Mr K M Sahni, former Labour Secretary, has been appointed Member Secretary to operationalise the Wage Boards.

The two Boards will have ten members each.

Besides the Chairman, the full-time Member Secretary, two independent members and three members representing employers' organisations will be common to both the Boards.

The remaining three members in each Board will be from employees' organisations representing working journalists and non-working journalists, respectively.

A notification to this effect would be issued shortly.

Dr Justice Kurup is a former Judge of Kerala High Court and has also served as the Acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court.

The first indication of the constitution of a Wage Board for journalists came from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a day before newspaper and news agency employees were scheduled to march to his residence to protest the delay. Labour Minister Oscar Fernandes had told reporters early this month that his Ministry had finalised the setting up of Wage Boards for journalists and non-journalists.
