Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, May 21 (UNI) Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) Founder-Leader S Ramadoss today said efforts must be taken to fulfill Gandhiji's vision of total prohibition.

Speaking at a PMK Youth Wing Conference, Dr Ramadoss disputed the Tamil Nadu Government's contention that total prohibition in the state will lead to illicit liquor menace, saying the evil was present even now.

He said the government itself seemed to encourage drinking habit among the younger generation. Quoting statistics, Dr Ramadoss said the number of TASMAC shops selling liquor had doubled to 8,000 under the current regime from the 4,000 during the AIADMK rule.

The habit of drinking had almost destroyed a generation. He said the PMK was taking all efforts to bring about an awareness among the youth on the evils of drinking.

Giving another example, he said while Virdhunagar District topped in the recently announced Plus Two results, Cuddalore and Villupuram lagged. However, in terms of liquor consumption, these two districts came first.

Turning to other issues, Dr Ramadoss said while the country progressed in IT, it lagged in agriculture. Even the prime minister had expressed concern over this.

The PMK leader said everybody should tunk about universal education and make the dream come true.
