Plea for Welfare Council for building workers
Tirupati, May 21 (UNI) Chittoor District Electrician Workers (CDEW) affiliated to Bharat Mazddur Sangh (BMS) observed a relay-hunger strike near Municipal Office here today demanding the government to constitute a Welfare Council for the Building Construction Workers (BCW).
As many as 50 workers led by the leaders and BMS State Vice President Gowri Shanker staged the relay-hunger strike demanding the issue of identity cards to BCW through the Council. They urged the government to implement ground insurance schemes besides medical facility to the workers.
They also demanded scholarships to the childworkers through the Council.
Speaking at the camp, Mr Shanker said some of the states had implemented Acts for the benefit of the BCW as per the advice of the three-member committee constituted by the Central Government in 1996 while some states had still not implemented and was indirectly supporting the contractors, he alleged.
The State Government should constitute a full-fledged Welfare Council besides appointing district committees to save workers from the contractors, he added.
