Govt doctors call off stir

Madurai, May 21 (UNI) Doctors at Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH), owing allegiance to the Tamil Nadu Government Doctors' Association (TNGDA), today called off their agitation launched to protest against the arrest of two surgeons of a private clinic here.

The surgeons were arrested following the death of a boy on whom the surgeons performed a surgery.

TNGDA District Secretary K Senthil announced the association's decision to call off the indefinite strike from tomorrow.

Earlier, City Police Commissioner and IGP A Subramanian held talks with the GRH Dean to settle the issue.

While conceding to transfer the police inspector, who arrested the doctors, the Police Commissioner refused to withdraw the cases filed against the doctors.

In the morning, a large number of people from the victim's village, Melachinanampatti near Vadipatti, gathered at the Collectorate demanding justice for the family, which lost the boy.

The villagers presented a memorandum to the District Collector, demanding a judicial probe into the matter and arrest of the doctor couple, who had been enlarged on bail.

They also sought adequate compensation to the victim's family.

It may be recalled that the boy was admitted to the private clinic run by Doctor Sivagurunathan and his wife Vijayalakshmi.

After conducting a surgery on the boy, the doctor couple took him to a corporate hospital.

When the hospital denied admission, the boy was rushed to the GRH, where he died.

Following this, the parents lodged a complaint with the police and subsequently the doctor couple was arrested.
