Drop Palar project: MK to YSR

Chennai, May 21 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today urged his Andhra Pradesh counterpart Y S Rajasekara Reddy to immediately drop the state's proposal to build a check dam across river Palar at Ganesapuram in Chittoor district.

Reddy, the Chief Minister said building of the dam would be a serious violation of the 1892 Madras-Mysore agreement, which categorically states that Andhra Pradesh, if wanted to build a dam across river Palar, should obtain the consent of Tamil Nadu government.

Mr Karunanidhi said the people of the water starving Vellore and Kancheepuram districts in Tamil Nadu are totally depending Palar for their drinking water needs. The atomic power station at Kalpakkam and the nearby township also totally depended on Palar, he said.

Hence, budiling of dam across Palar would badly affect the northern districts of Tamil Nadu and trigger serious water crisis, he further said.
