Crime Branch to probe encroachment in Munnar: Minister

Idukki, Kerala, May 21 (UNI) Kerala Home and Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan today said a Special Crime Branch team would probe into illegal encroachment at Munnar in the district.

Action would be taken against those who made bogus pattayams and who assisted in the crime, encroachers and mafias, he told reporters after visiting the demolished areas at Munnar.

Mr Balakrishnan said the government was satisfied with the work of the special team engaged in demolition of illegal structures.

Reiterating the future of tourism in the area would not be affected due to the demolition drive, the Minister said the government was preparing a Master Plan for beautification of Munnar and allotted Rs five crore for the purpose.

The follow-up of the project, to be completed in one year, would start in four months, he said and added a high-level meeting of the officials and panchayat members in the area would be convened at Thiruvananthapuram on May 23.

A portion of the regained government land would be handed over to the Tourism Department and buildings suitable to the environment would be constructed for tourism purpose, he said.

The Minister also stated the government land held by the Tatas would be retained.
