Congress terms CPI-M's land struggle 'undemocratic'

Hyderabad, May 21 (UNI) The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today termed the Communist Party of India-Marxist' (CPI-M) 'Bhoopratam' agitation in the state ''undemocratic'' and said grabbing government land was ''unlawful''.

In a statement here, the party's official spokesperson N Tulasi Reddy said the government had been distributing land among the poor people and there was no meaning in CPI(M)'s agitation on the issue in the state.

He said the govenrment had distributed 4.37 lakh acres to the poor in the state and developed 2.40 lakh acres of land at a cost of Rs 213 crore to bring this land under cultivation.

He said the State Government was constructing houses for the poor under 'Indiramma' scheme. He said it had already constructed 17.85 lakh houses during the last three years and it proposed to construct 50 lakh houses by 2009.

He appealed to the CPI(M) leaders to stop the land struggle in the state and co-operate with the government in its efforts to distribute land to landless poor.
