Kolkata, May 21 (UNI) Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will introduce Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), as the third satellite television viewing option, to the viewers of Kolkata in June.

After Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore, Kolkata is the fifth city, where the service would be introduced.

While speaking to UNI, Calcutta Telephones General Manager (sales and marketing) Salil Kumar Bhaduri said, '' We will offer a bouquet of packages. The initial offer would be a 100-channel package.'' There would be various packages for BSNL landline subscribers, broadband customers and non-BSNL subscribers, he said.

BSNL broadband subscribers would only need to rent a smart electronic device (SED) to avail the IPTV services. The rent and the basic package fee would be around Rs 350 per month.

Those without BSNL broadband subscription can hire a modem in addition to the SED.

Subscribers to the service will have the options of recording programmes and eliminating advertisements. The picture will be of DVD quality.

''The annual rental of the devices and the basic package fee will come to around Rs 9,000 for those who do not have a BSNL landline connection. They will have to pay in advance. An installment option will be available,'' he said .

Interactive services, like video on demand and audio on demand, would be available on the IPTV platform in future. A movie on demand would cost about Rs 10.

There were 18 lakh cable connections in Kolkata, while about 80,000 people use set-top boxes to watch television through the Conditional Access System (CAS) and direct-to-home services.
