BHU professor's wife immolates herself

Varanasi, May 21 (UNI) The wife of a Banaras Hindu University (BHU) professor allegedly committed suicide by setting herself-afire in the Lanka area, here today.

Shanti Pandey (50) first locked herself inside a room in the Saket Nagar Colony house and then immolated herself after dousing with kerosene. The family members tried to save her by breaking open the doors, but by then she had succumbed to burns, police said.

The deceased was the wife of Surya Nath Pandey, Dean of Faculty of Arts, BHU. She was also undergoing treatment for mental ailment since the last one-month.

The body had been sent for autopsy and further investigations were on, police added.
