Lucknow, May 20 (UNI) After brief pleasant weather, Uttar Pradesh today reeled under hot summer conditions with the mercury rising in most parts of the state.

Though the maximum temperature was 38 degrees Celsius, a sharp rise in humidity levels to 40 per cent left the people of Lucknow perspiring.

A sudden burst of heavy rainfall in the state yesterday morning had brought the mercury down by several degrees, bringing people much needed relief from the roasting heat.

The 'Taj City' Agra recorded 41.6 degrees C, followed by Allahabad 37.9, Varanasi 35.2 and Kanpur 36.2.

A report from holy city Allahabad said the continuous rise in temperature and humidity level has forced people to remain in the comfort of their homes. However, heavy load shedding is aggravating the situation further.

The coolness in the air is expected to return to the state with weatherman forecasting rain and thundershowers in the next 24 hours.
