Sri Lanka nabs Pakistani drug smuggler at BIA
Colombo, May 20: Sri Lankan Customs officers arrested a Pakistani national attempting to smuggle in a large quantity of heroin to Sri Lanka at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).
The Pakistani national, who arrived by a flight from Karachi to the island's only international airport yesterday, was found to have brought with him five and a half kilogram of heroin concealed in motor spare parts when Sri Lankan Customs officers examined his baggage on suspicion, media reports said.
''The haul was the second largest quantity of heroin to be detected at the BIA in recent times, valued at over Rs 42 million,'' the State-run Sunday Observer newspaper said, adding that this was the second visit by the Pakistani to Sri Lanka.
Last year, customs seized 5.8 kilo of heroin at the BIA.
Several persons from India and Pakistan have been nabbed at the airport while attempting to smuggle heroin into the country in the recent past.
