Penguins early victims of climate change: Greenpeace
Bangalore, May 20 (UNI) Penguins will be the worst hit by climate change which is melting the polar ice caps and to highlight their plight a group of Greenpeace activists, dressed up like penguins, took part in a 'Midnight Marathon' in the city last night.
It was a protest against the great environmental threat and was intended to alert the people of India about the environmental hazards. They held placards with the message 'Stop Climate Change, Ban the Bulb.
''Our homes are endangered and we have learnt it because of the climate change that is already happening. We are here to seek your support to ban the bulb to fight climate change,'' the protesters said.
Greenpeace Executive Director G Ananthapadmanabhan said the plight of penguins was a warning that there was little time left to act. ''The IPCC report tells that we have just another eight years to act. We have to do everything to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. For India energy requirement in all sectors is imperative and to fight climate change, banning the bulb is a very simple first step,'' he said.
A similar protest against climate change had been organised at India Gate in New Delhi last fortnight.
