Trehan removed from Escorts, prevented from entering hosp

New Delhi, May 19 (UNI) Eminent cardiologist Naresh Trehan has been removed from the post of executive director of Escorts hospital, as he was ''focusing more on his self-promoted Medicity project, coming up in Gurgaon''.

Mr Shivinder Mohan Singh, managing director, Escorts and Fortis Healthcare Limited, said,''Over the past 18 months, Dr Trehan has been increasingly focussed on the Rs 1000 crore Medicity project at Gurgaon. It was a clear case of conflict of interest as he continued to concentrate more on his personal project.'' However, Dr Trehan will be allowed to attend on those patients in the hospital, who are already under his treatment, said a hospital official. He continues to be a 10 percent shareholder in Escorts.

Dr Trehan had held the position of ED, Escorts for 20 years.

This morning, there was tension in the hospital as relatives of patients were agitated over Dr Trehan's removal. They broke few windows and tried to vandalise property.

Dr Trehan was also prevented from entering the hospital. ''We had to take preventive measures in order to control the situation, as scores of people were also with him. Patient care was our most important concern,'' the official said.

Dr Trehan, who had single-handedly brought Escorts' name on the medical tourism map, was indignant about the treatment meted out to him. ''I am duty-bound to attend my patients. The relatives of those patients on whom serious surgeries had to be done are worried,''he said.
