Gurdaspur, May 19: Border Security Force (BSF) jawans shot dead a sarpanch and his teen-aged son in the border village of Thakurpur in this sector last night.

According to police officials, four BSF jawans intruded into the house of sarpanch Shingara Singh and started beating up the sarpanch and his family members. BSF personnel before leaving the house shot dead the sarpanch and his 16-year-old son Daljeet Singh.

Police investigations revealed that BSF jawans, identified as constables Latif, Shatrughan Singh, Saggu and T Chakravarthy, had earlier in the day picked up a quarrel with the sarpanch over some minor issue. The four jawans went back to their post at Thakurpur and came back with Self Loading Rifles which they used to kill the sarpanch and his son.

Police officials said that agitated residents of Thakurpur and other border villages converged on the Gurdaspur town and staged a dharna for three hours this morning at Post Office chowk on the Amritsar-Pathankot highway. Protesters demanded the immediate arrest of four BSF jawans.

BSF DIG R C Saxena later handed over the four jawans to the local police. He described the incident as very unfortunate.

The police, after registering a criminal case against the four jawans at Dorangla police station, have arrested them. The agitated villagers later lifted the dharna after the registration of the case.
