Authorities carry out eviction in Puducherry

Puducherry, May 19 (UNI) Tension prevailed at Saram area here following a drive to evict illegal encroachments today.

According to official sources, about 25 years ago people had encroached the government land at Avvai Thidal and constructed four houses and a shop.

Despite several notices, they failed to vacate the place.

After the court rejected their petition for a stay, Ozhukarai municipality along with police force began the eviction drive.

Tenion prevailed as legislator Om Sakthi Segar and councillor Ganesan argued with the officals for carrying out the eviction.

Amid tight security the encroachments were removed and the houses demolished.

The authorities assured that houses would be provded to the affected under the Slum Cleareance Board scheme.
