Another farmer attempts suicide

Gulbarga, May 19 (UNI) Government authorities in Basava Kalyan in Bidar District of Karnataka intervened and saved a sugarcane farmer who set himself on fire in front of the Tahsildar's office as a local cooperative Sugar mill failed to lift his crop for crushing.

The farmer, 35 year old Basavaraj Kamshetty who met the Tahsildar, Mr D Y Patil and got an assurance that steps would be taken to lift the sugarcane he had grown, however attempted self immolation in front of the Tahsildar's office yesterday as he was not satisfied with the assurance.

Mr Patil and other officials immediately rushed out and doused the fire, saving the farmer. Kamshetty suffered 50 per cent burns and was being treated at the Government Hospital here. His condition was said to be normal Officials said that that the suicid attempt was the 35th reported in Bidar district and the first in Basava Kalyan Taluk.
