12 held for attempt to travel using fake documents

Chennai, May 19 (UNI) Twelve people were arrested by the police when they attempted to leave Paris via Dubai by a Dubai-bound Emirates flight using fake travel documents, at Anna International Airport here early today.

Police said a 11-member group hailing from Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli Districts came here to catch the flight.

When they submitted their travel documents, including the visas, the immigration authorities found all the documents to be fake.

The officials detained and handed them over to the police.

During interrogation, they said they had given about Rs 16 lakh to one Alwar of Madurai running a overseas manpower agency and he had arranged everything for their travel.

Based on this information, a police party rushed to a private lodge in the city, where Alwar was staying. However, he had escaped by then. All the 11 were arrested and remanded to judicial custody.

In a similar case, Sivakumar (25) of Pattukkottai In Thanjavur District of Tamil Nadu was also arrested and he was handed over to the local police by the immigration authorities who found his visa to be fake.

Sivakumar was also bying to board the Dubai-bound Emirates flight,police said. Later, he was also remanded to judicial custody.
