Tiruchirapalli, May 18 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL) take up second phase of modernisation and expansion at an outlay of Rs 680 crore, Managing Director V Murthy said.

Addressing the press here today, Mr Murthy said presently TNPL officials were giving final touches to the Mill Development Plan-II (MDP-II) and tenders will be floated very soon.

After MDP-II completion, the production capacity of the factory would touch 3.65 lakh metric ton from the present 2.30 lakh metric ton.

The first phase of the Rs 585 crore MDP taken up last year would be completed by July this year after which work on second plan will begin.

TNPL's pulpwood requirement was set to go up after the expansion projects were completed. At present, the factory consumed 1.50 lakh ton pulpwood a year which will go up to 3.50 lakh ton once the MDP-I was completed.

This would go up further after MDP-II was completed. To meet the increased demand, TNPL had intensified implementation of Farm Forestry and Captive Plantation Schemes.

Small and marginal farmers would be encouraged to grow pulpwood species such as casuarina and eucalyptus on degraded, waste or wet lands.
