Acting on a tip-off, police laid an ambush at the Kulsi river area of Chayygaon in Kamrup district this evening and spotted three rebels. When they refused to stop and lobbed a grenade and fired at the securitymen, the two rebels were gunned down on the spot.
No one was injured in the police side though the grenade exploded close to them.
One of the rebels, who was suspected to have sustained injuries, fled in the cover of night.
A pistol, four Austria-made grenades, several rounds of live ammunition, one handset, wires and switches were recovered from the two unidentified slain militants.
In another incident, a hardcore ULFA rebel was arrested by police during an operation in the Kamalpur area under Changsari police station of Kamrup late last night.
Police said the rebel, Bikram Singh, is a senior cadre of the '27th Battalion' of the outfit and hails from Karbi Anglong.
A grenade, fuse wires, a detonator and a pistol with six live rounds were seized from him.
