Striking workers obstruct sanitary work

Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, May 16 (UNI) About 100 striking sanitary workers were taken into police custody when they obstructed sanitary workers brought by the municipal corporation from neighbouring village panchayats for cleaning the piled up garbage in the city.

About 2,000 municipal sanitary workers, including private contract workers, were on strike for the last three days to press their demands which included regularising the services of temporary workers and hiking the wages of contract workers.

As garbage from fruits and vegetable markets, fish markets and slaughter houses were getting piled up in the city, the municipal administration had last night removed the garbage with police escort.

This morning, when about 250 sanitary workers from villges started cleaning the streets, the striking corporation workers prevented them, following which the latter were arrested. The boisterous municipal workers stormed into the municipal corporation office and threatened and abused the Commissioner for deploying panchayat workers to break their strike.
