Protests continue over Sacha Sauda issue, 10 hurt

Chandigarh, May 16: As many as 10 people were injured in clashes and police lathicharge as protests continued at various places in Punjab against Dera Sacha Sauda head for allegedly posing as Guru Gobind Singh.

In Patiala, police resorted to lathi charge when protesting Sikh activists clashed with Dera Sacha Sauda followers at Arya Samaj chowk. At least ten people were injured.

Trouble started when Sikh activists were holding a protest march and asking the shopkeepers to close their shops. However, Sacha Sauda followers opposed them and started brick batting, injuring two Sikhs.

At least, 20 scooters and some shops were damaged during the clash. Police later provided security to the shops owned by the followers of Sacha Sauda. Police rounded up four people in connection with the clash.

A report from Rajpura said that a 'Satsang ghar' of Dera Sacha Sauda was set ablaze by unidentified persons.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 were imposed in Patiala city.

Earlier, about 1000 Sikhs gathered at Gurdwara Dukhniwran Sahib and later came out with swords and lathis to take out a protest march in the city. Police, however, allowed the march only after disarming them.

In Bathinda, which witnessed clashes over the issue for two days, all educational institutions were closed for next three days. The administration also clamped prohibitory orders in the town.

In Amritsar, Sikh activists took out processions in the city today, protesting against the activities of Dera Sacha Sauda.

The protesters, many of them weilding swords, went through different bazars and forced closure of shops in the Hall Bazar, Golden Temple area and other commercial areas.

Some Sikh educational institutions were also closed in the city.

However, banks and other institutions were functioning normally.

Police was patrolling the area as thsousands of people visited the Golden Temple on the occasion of ''Amavasya''.
